Details
The British Rail Class 47 is one of the most successful and widely recognised diesel-electric locomotives in British railway history, making it a cornerstone subject for model railway collections. Designed in the early 1960s by Brush Traction and British Railways, the Class 47 was built as part of BR’s modernisation programme to replace steam traction with reliable, versatile diesel power. Between 1962 and 1968, an impressive 512 locomotives were constructed, making it one of the largest locomotive classes ever built in the UK.
Class 47s were engineered for mixed-traffic roles, capable of hauling express passenger trains, parcels and heavy freight alike across the national network, thanks to a robust Co-Co wheel arrangement and engines producing around 2,750Â bhp. They became familiar across Britain in a variety of operator liveries, including classic BR two-tone green, blue, and later private-sector colours following railway privatisation in the 1990s and 2000s.
Many Class 47s enjoyed long service lives, with a number still operating on heritage railways and in charter service today.
