Details
The British Rail Class 37 is one of the most iconic and long-lived diesel-electric locomotives in British railway history, making it a must-have subject for any model railway enthusiast. Built between 1960 and 1965 by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn, a total of 309 Class 37s were produced as part of British Rail’s early dieselisation programme.
Known for its distinctive “growl” exhaust note and reliable performance, the Class 37 was designed for mixed-traffic work, handling both passenger and freight services with ease. Its Co-Co wheel arrangement and approximately 1,750 hp engine gave it the versatility to work across the UK network, from rural branch lines to main line freight duties, throughout a career that spanned decades.
Class 37s served with numerous operators in a wide variety of liveries, from classic British Rail green and blue to eye-catching private-sector colours after railway privatisation. Many locomotives continued in service into the 21st century, while others have been preserved and operate on heritage railways today.
