Details

The British Rail Class 08 is Britain’s most iconic diesel-electric shunting locomotive, built as the standard general-purpose shunter for British Railways during the early diesel era. A total of 996 locomotives were constructed between 1952 and 1962 at works including Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich, making the Class 08 the most numerous class of British diesel locomotive ever built. Its rugged, practical design features a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement and an English Electric 6KT diesel engine, producing around 350–400 hp and giving a low-speed maximum of about 15–20 mph ideal for yard-work and freight duties.

For decades the Class 08 was a familiar sight across the UK, quietly shunting wagons, arranging freight consists and working in depots, stations and industrial sidings. Although many were withdrawn as rail freight patterns changed, a remarkable number remain in service on industrial railways today and around 80–90 examples are preserved on heritage lines, making them one of the most common preserved British locomotive classes.
