Details

The LNER Class A4 is one of the most iconic and celebrated steam locomotive designs in British railway history, instantly recognisable for its streamlined, art-deco styling and high-speed performance. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in the mid-1930s, the A4s were built to haul premier express passenger trains on services such as the Flying Scotsman between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh.

A total of 35 Class A4 locomotives were constructed from 1935 to 1938, featuring a 4-6-2 Pacific wheel arrangement, high-pressure boilers and a sleek profile optimised for speed. Their design allowed sustained high-speed running, and in 1938 locomotive 4468 Mallard set the **world steam speed record of 126 mph, a record that still stands today.

Class A4 locomotives carried a range of distinctive liveries — from LNER garter blue to post-war British Railways colours — making them a striking presence on the rails. Several A4s survive in preservation, including Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Bittern, Union of South Africa and Dominion of Canada, and they continue to delight visitors on heritage lines and at galas.
