Details

The LMS Coronation Class is one of Britain’s most powerful and striking steam locomotive types, designed to haul prestigious express passenger trains on the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). Conceived by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1937, the Coronation Class featured a bold 4-6-2 “Pacific” wheel arrangement, lavish streamlining on early examples, and large boilers for sustained high-speed performance over mainline express services such as the Midland Pullman and The Coronation Scot.

A total of 38 locomotives were built between 1937 and 1948, with the first ten constructed with streamlined casings for air-flow efficiency and aesthetic impact, while later engines carried a more conventional appearance but retained the class’s power and prestige. Numbered in the 6200s and 6300s, these locomotives were rated among the most capable of pre-war British steam, combining speed with heavy-haul capability across the West Coast Main Line and beyond.

After nationalisation in 1948, the surviving Coronation Class engines were incorporated into British Railways, receiving modernised liveries yet still excelling in express duties. Several locomotives have survived into preservation, including 46233 Duchess of Hamilton, which remains a favourite on heritage railways and mainline steam tours, capturing the imagination with its size, power and historic significance.
