Details
The GNR Class N2 is a quintessential British 0-6-2T steam locomotive designed by Henry Ivatt for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and introduced in 1921. Built for suburban passenger and branch-line work around London King’s Cross and the East Coast network, the N2 became a familiar sight hauling commuter trains, local services and stopping-tonnage duties where quick acceleration and good tractive effort were essential.
A total of 175 locomotives were constructed between 1921 and 1929, and after the 1923 grouping they continued in service with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), where they retained their practical design and strong performance. Their 0-6-2T wheel arrangement combined excellent traction with compact proportions, ideal for tight curves and frequent station stops typical of suburban and branch operations. Class N2s remained in use well into the British Railways era, with the last examples withdrawn in the 1960s as diesel multiple units increasingly replaced steam on local passenger services.
