Using the proven RailRoad Class 800 tooling, this two-car train pack includes a powered driving car and a matching dummy car, making it an ideal starter set addition or a dynamic upgrade for existing modern image layouts. Finished in the distinctive GBR “Union Jack” inspired livery, it offers a contemporary and eye-catching presence on any OO gauge railway.

Designed for reliable everyday operation, the Class 800 Azuma combines durability with smooth performance, making it perfect for both display and regular running on modern main line layouts.

This RailRoad Class 800 model is built for dependable operation, featuring a robust bodyshell and smooth-running motor designed for consistent performance over long operating sessions. Directional lighting enhances realism, while the streamlined Azuma profile captures the appearance of modern intercity high-speed trains operating across the UK network.

The model is DCC Ready and features a 21-pin decoder socket compatible with the Hornby HM7000 system, allowing easy digital upgrade including sound functionality via the R7322 HM7000-21TXS decoder and speaker. Provision is also included for an HM7070 power bank, enabling uninterrupted smooth running on complex layouts.

The two-car pack can be expanded using compatible coach sets R40570, R40571 and R40572, allowing modellers to build a full-length five-car Azuma formation for a more realistic operational experience.

Historical Background

The real Class 800 Azuma trains are part of the UK’s modern intercity fleet introduced to provide faster, more efficient long-distance passenger services across the East Coast Main Line and beyond. Built as bi-mode units, they are capable of operating under both electric power and diesel power, allowing them to run seamlessly across electrified and non-electrified routes.

In 2025, a special demonstration unit was produced in partnership with the Department for Transport to showcase the proposed Great British Railways (GBR) livery ahead of the transition to a unified national rail identity. This new scheme, based on a stylised interpretation of the Union Flag, represents a bold visual rebranding of passenger services under GBR from 2026 onwards.
