Details

The British Rail Class 395 ‘Javelin’ is a modern dual-voltage high-speed electric multiple unit built by Hitachi Rail as part of its A-train family for Southeastern’s high-speed commuter services on the High Speed 1 (HS1) route and beyond.

Ordered in June 2005, twenty-nine six-car sets were manufactured between 2007 and 2009 at Hitachi’s Kasado Works in Japan, making the Class 395 the first Hitachi-built rail vehicle exported to Europe and specifically designed to operate on both 25 kV AC overhead electrification and 750 V DC third-rail systems.

After successful early testing, a preview service began in June 2009, with full regular operations starting in December 2009, delivering much-faster journeys from Kent into London St Pancras—for example reducing times from Ashford to London to around 37 minutes.

The Class 395 earned the nickname ‘Javelin’ during the 2012 London Olympics, when it provided dedicated high-speed shuttle services, a name that has since stuck with the fleet.

Capable of speeds up to 140 mph (225 km/h) on HS1, the Javelin has become an iconic part of the UK’s domestic high-speed network, boosting passenger numbers and modernising commuter travel into the capital.
