Details

The Clams and Rudds were introduced in 1989 for use on engineering and permanent way trains, carrying ballast, spoil, and sleepers. Built with new low-sided steel bodies on underframes reclaimed from redundant MGR hopper wagons, they offered a cost-effective solution for infrastructure trains. The Clams featured fixed sides and ends and retained vacuum brakes, while the Rudds, similar to the older Tunny wagons, had three drop doors in the sides and were fitted with air brakes. A total of 400 Clam wagons entered service under the TOPS code ZCV, becoming a familiar sight on British Rail engineering operations.
