Also classified as ‘ZCV’ or ‘ZDV’ under the TOPS system, ‘Tope’ wagons were introduced in 1988. Rebuilt from redundant MGR hopper wagons, they featured cut-down, welded bodies with simplified side bracing. Primarily used on departmental trains for carrying ballast or disposing of spoil, the wagons provided a durable and efficient solution for engineering and maintenance work. By the time the last unit was completed in 1991, a total of 856 Tope wagons had been converted, making them a common and essential part of British Rail’s infrastructure fleet during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
