The BR 21-ton hopper wagon was based on an earlier LNER design and continued to be built in large numbers throughout the 1950s. Primarily designed for carrying coal, these wagons featured either riveted or welded bodies. By the mid-1960s, many had been rebodied due to corrosion or distortion from heavy use, extending their service life on the British rail network. Their robust, utilitarian design made them a common sight on coal flows and a key example of post-war freight wagon standardisation, making them a popular subject for historical and model railway layouts.
