Details

Brake vans were an essential part of freight trains where continuous brakes were not fitted. Loose-coupled wagons relied on hand-operated ‘sprag’ brakes, which had to be applied individually, for example when descending a gradient. Trains were also prone to broken coupling chains, making the brake van crucial for safely bringing a train to a halt. From 1968, the requirement for a brake van on fitted trains (with vacuum brakes) was removed. British Rail based its standard brake van design on the LNER ‘Toad D’, combining proven construction with updated features for post-war freight operations.
