Details
Add authentic pre-nationalisation shunting power to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 LNER J50 Class 0-6-0T, running number 600. This finely detailed model represents one of the Great Northern Railway’s most capable small tank locomotives, later absorbed into LNER service for intensive yard work, trip freight duties, and short branch line operations.
The J50 class was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for heavy shunting and short-distance freight work, making it a reliable performer in goods yards, depots, and industrial sidings across the LNER network. Built in multiple batches from the 1920s through to the late 1930s, the class featured several design variations in boilers, brakes, and bunker configurations, with over 100 locomotives eventually constructed.
This model depicts the locomotive in LNER black livery, representing its pre-nationalisation appearance. It is ideal for Era 3 layouts and brings authentic early 20th-century freight operations to life on compact TT layouts and detailed yard scenes.
The model features finely moulded tank and boiler detailing, separately applied components, and a compact wheelbase suited to realistic yard operations. The J50’s short wheelbase and strong tractive effort made it ideal for shunting wagons in confined spaces and handling short freight trips.
It pairs naturally with classic freight stock such as ventilated vans, open wagons, and private owner wagons, and is commonly used in yard scenes alongside other small tank locomotives.
Historical Background
The Gresley-designed J50 class originated from the Great Northern Railway’s J23 locomotives, with later LNER development creating a versatile fleet of small tank engines for freight and shunting duties. A total of 102 locomotives were built across several variants between 1922 and 1939.
These locomotives were widely distributed across the LNER network, working from Scotland to East Anglia. Their duties included station pilot work, freight yard shunting, and short-distance trip workings. Many survived into British Railways service after 1948, continuing reliable operation until withdrawal in the early 1960s.
