Details
Add modern freight yard realism to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 EWS Class 08 diesel shunter, running number 08499. This highly detailed model represents Britain’s most iconic shunting locomotive in EWS maroon and gold livery, reflecting its role in privatised freight operations across depots and terminals throughout the UK.
The Class 08 is the most numerous British shunting locomotive ever built, with nearly 1,000 examples produced between 1952 and 1962. Designed for low-speed yard and depot duties, these diesel-electric locomotives became the backbone of British freight operations, handling wagon sorting, yard movements, and short trip workings for decades. Many examples continued well into the modern era under freight operators such as EWS.
This model represents locomotive 08499, finished in authentic EWS branding used during the privatisation period. It is ideal for Era 9–11 layouts and brings essential operational detail to modern freight yards, terminals, and industrial scenes.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, separately applied components, and accurate underframe equipment typical of the Class 08 design. Its compact wheelbase and strong tractive effort make it ideal for tight-radius yard layouts and intensive shunting duties.
It pairs naturally with a wide range of freight stock including hopper wagons, tank wagons, open wagons, and MEA steel carriers, making it one of the most versatile locomotives for realistic freight yard operation.
Historical Background
The Class 08 was introduced as part of British Railways’ post-war modernisation programme to replace steam shunters. Built at several BR workshops including Crewe, Derby, and Darlington, the class quickly became the standard yard locomotive across the UK rail network.
Following privatisation in the 1990s, many Class 08s passed into EWS ownership, where they continued to perform essential depot and freight yard duties. Their reliability and simplicity ensured many remained in service well into the 21st century, with numerous examples still preserved or in limited industrial use today.
