Details
Bring unique island railway character to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 Isle of Wight A1 “Terrier”, running number 10. This highly detailed model represents one of the most distinctive members of the famous Stroudley “Terrier” class, later operated on the Isle of Wight Central Railway after transfer from mainland service.
The A1 “Terrier” class was designed by William Stroudley and built between 1872 and 1880, with just 50 locomotives produced. Although small in size, these locomotives were highly capable, originally designed for dense suburban passenger services in London and later redeployed to rural and branch line duties where their compact wheelbase and strong acceleration were ideal.
Isle of Wight locomotive No. 10 began life on the mainland before being purchased for island service in 1899. It worked for the Isle of Wight Central Railway, where it operated until withdrawal in the 1930s. The locomotive is particularly well known for its distinctive island identity and long service life in rural branch line duties.
This model captures the striking Isle of Wight Central Railway livery, making it ideal for Era 2 layouts and authentic pre-grouping or early preservation-themed TT:120 railway scenes.
This model features finely moulded tank and boiler detailing, accurately reproduced cab features, and realistic fittings that capture the character of Stroudley’s original design. Its compact size makes it especially suited to small branch lines, harbour scenes, and tightly curved TT layouts.
It pairs naturally with early period rolling stock such as four-wheel coaches and small freight wagons, ideal for recreating authentic rural and island railway operations.
Historical Background
The “Terrier” class was introduced in 1872 for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway to handle fast suburban services with frequent stops. Their excellent acceleration and compact design made them highly successful in congested urban environments.
As newer locomotives entered service, many Terriers were sold to smaller railways. No. 10 was one such example, purchased by the Isle of Wight Central Railway in 1899. It went on to serve the island’s branch lines for over three decades, becoming part of the distinctive character of Isle of Wight rail operations before withdrawal in 1936.
