Details

Bring iconic 1980s British Rail diesel power to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 BR Class 50 “Indomitable”, running number 50026. This highly detailed model represents one of the most famous locomotives of the Class 50 fleet, known for its powerful performance on express passenger and fast freight services across the UK.

The Class 50 was built by English Electric between 1967 and 1968, with 50 locomotives produced for high-speed passenger work on non-electrified main lines. Originally introduced for WCML express duties, the class later became strongly associated with Western Region services, particularly after transfer and refurbishment. Their distinctive Co-Co wheel arrangement and robust diesel-electric design made them capable of hauling heavy express trains at sustained speed.

This model depicts locomotive 50026 “Indomitable” in British Rail large logo blue livery, reflecting its 1980s appearance. Named after HMS Indomitable, the locomotive is a well-known preserved example and remains one of the most recognisable members of the Class 50 family.

This model features finely reproduced bodyshell detailing, separately applied components, and accurate underframe equipment characteristic of the Class 50 class. Its Co-Co wheel arrangement provides strong traction, making it suitable for both express passenger and heavy freight operations.

It pairs naturally with Mk2 and Mk3 coaching stock for passenger services, as well as freight consists including hopper wagons, tank wagons, and intermodal traffic for mixed-traffic layouts.

Historical Background

Locomotive D426 (later 50026) entered service in 1968 and was named Indomitable in 1978 after the Royal Navy aircraft carrier. The Class 50 fleet became a mainstay of BR express services, particularly on Western Region routes, where they handled fast passenger trains between London and the South West.

During the 1980s, many Class 50s received the distinctive large logo blue livery, marking their continued importance in BR’s modernised diesel fleet. 50026 survived withdrawal and has since become a preserved locomotive, representing the enduring legacy of the class.
