Details
Bring one of Britain’s most famous steam locomotives to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 LMS Stanier 5MT “Black 5”, running number 5408. This highly detailed model represents the legendary Stanier mixed-traffic 4-6-0, a true “do-anything” locomotive that became the backbone of LMS and later British Railways operations.
The Black 5 class was designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1934 to provide a versatile locomotive capable of hauling both passenger and freight services across the network. A total of 842 locomotives were built, making it one of the most successful and widely used British steam classes. Their flexibility, reliability, and strong performance earned them a reputation as one of the greatest all-round steam designs ever built.
This model represents locomotive 5408 in classic LMS black livery, reflecting its pre-nationalisation appearance. It is ideal for Era 3 layouts and captures the essential character of mid-20th-century British mixed-traffic steam operations.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurate boiler proportions, and separately applied components that capture the distinctive Stanier design. The tender and chassis are faithfully reproduced to reflect the heavy-duty mixed-traffic role of the prototype.
It pairs naturally with a wide range of LMS rolling stock including ventilated vans, open wagons, and freight hoppers, as well as period coaching stock for passenger services.
Historical Background
The LMS Stanier Class 5 was introduced in 1934 as a standard mixed-traffic locomotive capable of handling virtually any duty. Designed under the leadership of Sir William Stanier, the class combined strong hauling power with high route availability, making it suitable for almost all mainline routes across Britain.
During its production life, 842 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1951 at LMS works and by external contractors. The class remained in widespread service through the British Railways era, with withdrawals not beginning in earnest until the late 1960s. Their versatility and reliability made them one of the most respected steam classes in British railway history.
