Details
Bring one of the most iconic British steam locomotives to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 BR Stanier 5MT “Black 5”, running number 45315. This highly detailed model represents the legendary Stanier mixed-traffic 4-6-0, a true all-rounder that formed the backbone of British Railways’ steam fleet.
The Black 5 class was designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1934 for the LMS to provide a powerful yet versatile locomotive capable of handling both passenger and freight duties. A total of 842 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1951, making it one of the most successful British steam classes ever produced. Their reliability and flexibility earned them the reputation of being a “do-anything” locomotive, found across the entire UK rail network.
This model depicts locomotive 45315 in BR early crest black livery, representing its post-nationalisation service period. It is ideal for Era 4 layouts and captures the transition from LMS heritage into British Railways operation.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurate Stanier proportions, and separately applied components that reflect the robust mixed-traffic design of the prototype. Its 4-6-0 wheel arrangement provides a balance of traction and speed, making it suitable for both freight and passenger services.
It pairs naturally with LMS and early BR rolling stock including ventilated vans, open wagons, and period coaching stock, making it ideal for authentic mid-20th-century mixed traffic operations.
Historical Background
The LMS Stanier Class 5 was introduced in 1934 to create a standard mixed-traffic locomotive capable of working across the entire LMS network. Designed by Sir William Stanier, it combined strong hauling ability with wide route availability, making it one of the most versatile steam locomotives ever built.
After nationalisation in 1948, the class became a cornerstone of British Railways steam operations. Many locomotives received BR liveries and continued working across the country until the final withdrawals in the late 1960s. Their long service life and widespread use have made them one of the most famous steam classes in British railway history.
