Details
Bring classic British steam power to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 BR Stanier 5MT “Black 5”, running number 45446. This highly detailed model represents one of the most successful and versatile mixed-traffic steam locomotives ever built, designed to handle both passenger and freight duties across the British Railways network.
The Black 5 class was designed by Sir William Stanier for the LMS and introduced in 1934. A total of 842 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1951, making it one of the most numerous and widely used British steam classes in history. Known for their reliability and adaptability, Black 5s worked virtually everywhere in the UK, earning a reputation as the ultimate all-purpose steam locomotive.
This model represents locomotive 45446 in BR service, finished in British Railways black livery, reflecting its post-nationalisation era appearance. It is ideal for Era 4 layouts and captures the everyday mixed-traffic steam operations that defined British railways in the 1950s and 1960s.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurate Stanier proportions, and separately applied components that reflect the robust and practical design of the prototype. Its 4-6-0 wheel arrangement provides an excellent balance of traction and speed, making it suitable for both express passenger and freight services.
It pairs naturally with a wide range of BR steam-era rolling stock, including ventilated vans, open wagons, and mixed freight consists, as well as coaching stock for secondary passenger services.
Historical Background
The LMS Stanier Class 5 was introduced to create a standard mixed-traffic locomotive capable of working across the entire LMS network. Designed by Sir William Stanier, it combined strong pulling power with wide route availability, making it one of the most successful steam locomotive designs ever produced.
After nationalisation in 1948, the class became a cornerstone of British Railways steam operations. Locomotive 45446 served during this period, continuing the Black 5 tradition of dependable mixed-traffic work until the gradual withdrawal of steam in the late 1960s.
