Details

Bring classic British Rail diesel versatility to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 BR Class 31, running number D5502. This highly detailed model represents one of the early Brush Type 2 locomotives, a key part of British Rail’s Modernisation Plan and a long-serving mixed-traffic diesel class used across passenger and freight services.

The Class 31 was originally introduced in 1957 as part of the BR diesel pilot scheme, with 263 locomotives built in total. Designed by Brush Traction, these locomotives were intended for mixed-traffic duties, operating across a wide range of routes including the Eastern Region and later throughout the UK. Early examples, such as D5502, are part of the initial batch fitted with Mirrlees engines before later rebuilds with English Electric power units.

This model depicts D5502 in early BR green livery, reflecting its original appearance in service during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It is ideal for Era 5 layouts and captures the transition from steam to diesel traction on British Railways.

This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurately reproduced A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, and separately applied components reflecting the early Brush Type 2 design. Its mixed-traffic capability makes it suitable for both passenger and freight duties across TT layouts.

It pairs naturally with BR-era rolling stock including Mk1 coaching stock, ventilated vans, and open wagons, making it ideal for recreating early dieselisation period operations.

Historical Background

The Class 31 (originally classified as Class 30 for early units) was developed under British Railways’ 1950s Modernisation Plan to replace steam traction with modern diesel-electric locomotives. Built by Brush Traction, the class initially suffered reliability issues due to early engine choices but was later improved through re-engining programmes.

Locomotive D5502 represents one of the early production units introduced in the late 1950s. These locomotives became widely used across the UK, performing a variety of duties from passenger services to freight and parcel work, and many remained in service for decades due to their versatility and robust design.
