Add further realism to your British Rail passenger formations with the Hornby BR Mk1 Composite Corridor Coach W15811 (TT4076E), produced in TT:120 scale (1:120).
Finished in the classic British Rail blue and grey livery, this Mk1 Composite Corridor (CK) coach represents later-era BR operations from the late 1960s onwards. Featuring both first and second-class compartments within a single vehicle, it provides operational flexibility when forming mixed-class passenger trains.
Designed for seamless integration with other Hornby TT:120 rolling stock, this model delivers finely detailed bodywork, accurate proportions, and smooth running performance. It is ideal for recreating authentic British Rail services across the transition era into the sectorisation period.
Historical Background
The British Railways Mark 1 coaching stock was introduced in 1951 as the first standardised passenger carriage design following the nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948.
At the time, British Railways inherited a wide variety of outdated rolling stock from the former “Big Four” companies. The Mk1 was developed to replace these with a unified, modern, and safer design suitable for all regions and types of service.
Between 1951 and 1963, thousands of Mk1 coaches were built at British Railways workshops including Derby, Swindon, York, Doncaster, Wolverton, and Eastleigh. (uk.hornby.com)
The design used a strong all-steel body mounted on a robust underframe, significantly improving crashworthiness compared with earlier wooden-bodied coaches. Mk1s were produced in many variants including corridor, open, brake, and composite types, allowing flexible train formation across the network.
They quickly became the backbone of British Rail passenger services throughout the 1950s and 1960s, operating on virtually every mainline route in the country. Their durability meant many remained in service for decades, with examples continuing into the late 20th century and later being preserved for heritage operations.
