Details
The 7-plank wagon was a common type of open goods wagon used throughout the UK from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century. Built mainly by private owners and railway companies, these wagons typically carried coal, minerals, and other bulk goods. The “7-plank” refers to the number of wooden side panels forming the body, providing a higher capacity than earlier designs. With their distinctive appearance and short wheelbase, they were a staple of Britain's industrial railway scene. Many were phased out after nationalisation in 1948, but numerous examples survive today on heritage railways and in museums.
