Details

The CDA hopper wagon was introduced by British Rail in the 1980s for transporting china clay in bulk from Cornwall to processing facilities. Designed to replace older clayhood wagons, the CDA featured a fully enclosed body with a rolling canvas hood to keep cargo dry, along with bottom discharge chutes for quick unloading. Over 100 were built, operating mainly on the St Blazey to Fowey route. Their design combined high capacity with efficient loading and unloading, serving the china clay industry for decades. Most were withdrawn in the 2020s, though several have been preserved by heritage railways.
