Among the most recognisable wagons ever built, private owner plank wagons were produced in vast numbers and formed the backbone of goods traffic across Great Britain.

Used extensively during the Big Four era and into early British Railways, these versatile open wagons carried everything from coal and sand to bricks and bagged goods. Their colourful, owner-specific liveries made them a standout feature in freight trains, adding authenticity and visual interest to any layout.

This model represents a 7-plank wagon owned by Frederick Cotton Mortimore, a coal merchant operating in the Somerset and Forest of Dean region. Finished in a distinctive “Mortimore” red livery with brown interior, it reflects a typical privately owned 12-ton wagon used to transport coal from collieries to local distribution points.
