Details
Add authentic modern-era engineering realism to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 EWS YGA “Seacow” ballast wagon, running number 980076. This finely detailed model represents one of Britain’s most recognisable ballast hopper wagon types, widely used across the network for permanent way maintenance and track renewal work.
The prototype “Seacow” wagons were developed for heavy-duty ballast transport, designed with a high-capacity hopper body and multiple discharge chutes to efficiently drop stone directly onto the trackbed. Built for operational flexibility, these wagons became a core part of British Rail infrastructure services and later continued in service under English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) ownership.
This model captures the distinctive EWS grey livery with accurate branding and printed markings, reflecting its post-privatisation Era 9–10 appearance. It is ideal for mixed engineering trains and pairs perfectly with depot and maintenance operations on modern TT layouts.
The model is finished in authentic EWS engineering grey livery with correctly applied logos and maintenance markings, representing post-privatisation infrastructure stock. The body features finely reproduced ribbing and discharge hopper detail, reflecting the prototype design used for ballast distribution and track maintenance. Designed for realistic engineering trains, this wagon is ideal when paired with locomotives such as the British Rail Class 37 or British Rail Class 66, commonly used on infrastructure duties.
The “Seacow” ballast wagon was developed in the early 1970s for British Rail’s engineering department, based on earlier hopper wagon concepts. Built at Shildon Works and later Ashford Works, over 250 examples were produced to support large-scale track maintenance programmes. Under TOPS classification, these wagons were designated YGA/YGB types, becoming a standard sight on maintenance trains throughout the late 20th century.
Following privatisation in the mid-1990s, many remained in service under EWS and other infrastructure operators, continuing their essential role in ballast distribution and track renewal across the UK rail network.
