Details

Add authentic UK engineering realism to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 Civil Engineers YGH “Sealion” wagon, running number 982838. This highly detailed model represents one of British Rail’s most distinctive hopper wagon designs, widely used for ballast and aggregate transport in infrastructure and maintenance-of-way operations.

The prototype “Sealion” wagons were developed from a proven early 20th-century hopper concept and built in the early 1970s at Shildon Works. Designed for heavy-duty ballast and mineral transport, they feature a ribbed hopper body with multiple discharge chutes, allowing controlled release of materials directly onto the trackbed during maintenance work.

This model captures the Civil Engineers livery used during the BR Sectorisation era, accurately reflecting its operational role in permanent way services. It is ideal for forming realistic engineering trains and pairs perfectly with other maintenance wagons and modern infrastructure locomotives.

Finished in authentic British Rail Civil Engineers colours, this model features finely reproduced structural ribbing, hopper discharge mechanisms, and underframe detail characteristic of the Sealion design. The wagon is designed for realistic operation in engineering trains and pairs well with locomotives such as the British Rail Class 37 or British Rail Class 66, commonly used on infrastructure and ballast duties.

The “Sealion” ballast wagon was introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s engineering modernisation programme. Based on earlier hopper wagon designs, the YGH variant was fitted specifically for engineering use, with a design optimised for rapid ballast discharge and durability under heavy workloads.

Over 400 wagons were built across multiple batches at Shildon Works, becoming a standard sight on maintenance trains throughout the late 20th century. These wagons remained in widespread use well into the privatisation era, continuing to support track renewal and infrastructure projects across the UK rail network.
