Details
Add authentic British Rail engineering realism to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 Civil Engineers YGH “Sealion” ballast wagon, running number 982838. This highly detailed model represents one of the most widely used infrastructure wagons on the UK rail network, designed specifically for ballast and aggregate transport during track maintenance and renewal work.
The prototype “Sealion” wagons were introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s engineering modernisation programme. Built at Shildon Works, they were developed for efficient high-volume ballast discharge, featuring a robust ribbed hopper body and multiple underframe discharge outlets that allowed stone to be accurately spread along the trackbed during maintenance operations.
This model accurately represents the YGH classification under BR TOPS, used for Civil Engineers service wagons throughout the Sectorisation and privatisation eras. Finished in authentic British Rail Civil Engineers livery, it features correctly applied numbering, warning markings, and operational detailing.
The wagon is finished in authentic BR Civil Engineers colours, featuring finely moulded structural ribbing, detailed hopper discharge equipment, and prototypical underframe components. Designed for realistic engineering train operation, it is ideal for use in ballast workings and infrastructure maintenance formations.
It pairs perfectly with infrastructure locomotives such as the British Rail Class 37 or British Rail Class 66, both commonly used on engineering and maintenance-of-way duties across the UK network.
The “Sealion” ballast wagon was introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s drive to modernise track maintenance equipment. The YGH variant was specifically designed for engineering use, improving ballast discharge efficiency and durability compared to earlier hopper wagon types.
A total of over 400 wagons were constructed at Shildon Works. Their robust welded design and improved operational capability ensured they remained in widespread use well into the privatisation era, continuing to support essential track renewal and infrastructure work across Britain.
