Details
Bring authentic British Rail engineering operations to your layout with this Hornby TT:120 Civil Engineers YGB “Seacow” ballast wagon triple pack, running numbers 980103, 980104, and 980105. This set represents three high-capacity engineering wagons designed for large-scale ballast transport and track maintenance across the UK rail network.
The prototype “Seacow” wagons were introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s engineering modernisation programme. Developed at Shildon Works, these wagons feature a robust ribbed hopper body with multiple discharge outlets, allowing ballast to be accurately and efficiently deposited along the track during maintenance and renewal work.
The YGB classification identifies these wagons as Civil Engineers stock used in infrastructure services during the BR Sectorisation and privatisation eras. They became a familiar sight in engineering trains throughout the late 20th century and into modern rail operations.
Finished in authentic British Rail Civil Engineers livery, each wagon is individually numbered for realistic train formation and features accurate printed markings, safety labels, and fine structural detailing.
They are ideal for use in mixed engineering consists and pair naturally with locomotives such as the British Rail Class 37 and British Rail Class 66, both commonly used on ballast and infrastructure duties.
The “Seacow” ballast wagon was developed by British Rail in the early 1970s to improve efficiency in track maintenance operations. A total of 128 wagons were initially built at Shildon Works in 1971, with later batches expanding the fleet significantly.
Designed for rapid ballast discharge, these wagons became a core part of the Civil Engineers fleet and remained in widespread use through the Sectorisation and privatisation eras, continuing to support essential track maintenance across the UK rail network.
