Details

Bring authentic British Rail engineering operations to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 Civil Engineers YGH “Sealion” wagon triple pack, running numbers 982841, 982842, and 982843. This set represents three heavy-duty ballast hopper wagons designed for efficient track maintenance, renewal work, and large-scale infrastructure projects across the UK rail network.

The prototype “Sealion” wagons were introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s engineering modernisation programme. Built at Shildon Works, they were developed from proven hopper wagon principles to handle high-volume ballast traffic. Their robust construction features a distinctive ribbed body and multiple discharge chutes, allowing precise and controlled release of stone directly onto the trackbed during engineering operations.

The YGH classification identifies these wagons as part of the Civil Engineers fleet, widely used throughout the Sectorisation era and continuing into privatisation. Their long service life made them a familiar sight on engineering trains across the network.

Finished in authentic British Rail Civil Engineers livery, each wagon in this triple pack is individually numbered for realistic train formation. The models feature accurate printed markings, warning labels, and finely reproduced structural detailing.

They are ideal for use in dedicated engineering consists and pair perfectly with locomotives such as the British Rail Class 37 and British Rail Class 66, both regularly used on infrastructure and ballast duties.

The “Sealion” ballast wagon was introduced in the early 1970s as part of British Rail’s drive to modernise infrastructure maintenance equipment. A total of 128 wagons were built at Shildon Works in 1971, with further batches following shortly after to expand the fleet for nationwide engineering use.

Designed for durability and operational efficiency, these wagons remained in widespread use through the late BR era and into privatisation, continuing to support essential ballast transport and track renewal work across the UK.
