Introduced in the late 1960s, it featured modifications such as the removal of offensive weapons systems and the addition of a second seat to accommodate an instructor. The TA-4F retained the Skyhawk's agility and carrier-operable design, making it an effective platform for training purposes. It served in this role until the early 1970s, when it was succeeded by the TA-4J model, which offered further enhancements for training operations.
