The Italeri Austerlitz 1805 – Fighting for Sokolnitz (6071) is a highly detailed 1/72 scale Napoleonic Wars diorama battle set, designed for advanced plastic kit modellers, historical diorama builders, and wargaming enthusiasts. This set recreates one of the most decisive and strategically significant moments of the Battle of Austerlitz (2 December 1805), widely regarded as Napoleon Bonaparte’s greatest victory and a defining masterpiece of military strategy.

Built around the intense fighting for the village of Sokolnitz, this kit combines large infantry formations with a structured battlefield environment, allowing modellers to construct a full narrative scene from the “Battle of the Three Emperors,” where French forces faced the combined armies of Russia and Austria.

Battle of Austerlitz was the decisive engagement of the War of the Third Coalition, fought on 2 December 1805 near present-day Slavkov u Brna. The Sokolnitz sector was one of the most fiercely contested areas of the battlefield, involving repeated assaults on fortified positions such as the granary and village structures.

This kit captures that exact combat environment in miniature form, making it ideal for historically accurate battlefield dioramas with high visual impact and narrative depth.

Background

The Battle of Austerlitz is considered Napoleon’s most brilliant tactical victory, fought during the War of the Third Coalition. The engagement is often referred to as the “Battle of the Three Emperors” due to the presence of Napoleon I of France, Tsar Alexander I of Russia, and Emperor Francis II of Austria.

One of the key operational objectives of the French plan was to draw allied forces into attacking the weaker French right flank, encouraging overextension before launching a decisive counterattack on the Pratzen Heights. Within this broader strategy, the Sokolnitz sector became a focal point of intense and sustained combat.

The fighting around Sokolnitz involved repeated assaults on fortified positions held by Russian and Austrian forces, including village structures, defensive buildings, and supply points. Control of this sector shifted multiple times throughout the battle, reflecting the chaotic and high-intensity nature of Napoleonic warfare at close quarters.

The outcome of the battle ultimately resulted in a decisive French victory, leading to the collapse of the Third Coalition and the Treaty of Pressburg shortly afterward. Austerlitz remains one of the most studied battles in military history due to its combination of deception, timing, and coordinated multi-corps maneuvers.
