This heavy-lift combat search and rescue (CSAR) aircraft was developed by Sikorsky from the CH-53 Sea Stallion to recover downed aircrew from hostile environments. Entering U.S. Air Force service in the late 1960s, the HH-53C became a vital asset throughout the Vietnam War, operating deep into contested territory under extreme combat conditions.

The HH-53C introduced significant upgrades over earlier variants, including an aerial refuelling probe for extended range, additional fuel tanks, reinforced armour protection, and provisions for defensive armament. Improved communications and avionics allowed it to coordinate complex rescue missions alongside escort aircraft, ensuring the safe extraction of personnel from high-risk areas.
