This adapted version of the Do 217 bomber was developed to meet the growing need for dedicated night interception aircraft within the Luftwaffe, operating primarily against Allied bomber formations over German-occupied territory.

The Do 217 J-series retained much of the original bomber airframe but was heavily modified for night fighter duties, including radar equipment and a powerful defensive armament layout. Although large and relatively heavy compared to other night fighters, it served in limited numbers and represented an important step in the evolution of radar-equipped interception aircraft during the Second World War.
