Details

The Nightjet is the flagship overnight sleeper train network operated by Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), Austria’s national railway company. It was launched on 11 December 2016 after Deutsche Bahn withdrew its City Night Line services, creating an opportunity for ÖBB to expand and modernise international night travel across Europe.

From its launch, Nightjet connected major European cities including Vienna, Zurich, Hamburg, Munich, Milan and Amsterdam, offering a mix of seated coaches, couchettes and sleeper cabins. The service quickly gained popularity as travellers looked for comfortable, environmentally friendly alternatives to short-haul flights.

As demand for sustainable long-distance rail grew, ÖBB expanded the Nightjet network through partnerships with rail operators such as SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) and SNCF, introducing new cross-border routes including Berlin to Paris and Brussels. This marked a significant revival of European overnight rail travel.

To support this expansion, ÖBB invested in new rolling stock, commissioning next-generation Nightjet trains from Siemens Mobility. These modern trains feature enhanced comfort, improved privacy in sleeper compartments and upgraded onboard facilities, reinforcing Nightjet’s position as Europe’s leading overnight train brand.

Today, Nightjet represents the renaissance of sleeper services in Europe and remains a popular choice for passengers seeking scenic, relaxed and sustainable long-distance travel.
