Historical Background

Skeleton log cars became a familiar sight on North American logging railroads during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their simple, lightweight construction, consisting primarily of a central spine with log bunks and stakes, allowed them to carry heavy timber loads while keeping the vehicle's own weight to a minimum. This made them especially well suited to the lightly built temporary railways that served remote forests.

Pulled by geared steam locomotives such as Shays, Heislers and Climaxes, skeleton log cars transported cut timber from logging camps to mills and interchange points. Their rugged design and adaptability made them an essential part of the North American timber industry, and they remain a favourite prototype for HO scale logging layouts today.
