Historical Background

Logging cabooses were a common feature of North American logging railroads during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Operating over rough, temporary track deep in forested regions, these compact cabooses provided shelter for train crews, space for tools and supplies, and a location for conductors to complete paperwork while travelling between logging camps, sawmills and interchange points.

Unlike standard railroad cabooses, logging cabooses were typically smaller and more ruggedly constructed to suit the demanding conditions of timber railroads. Running behind trains hauled by geared steam locomotives such as Shays, Heislers and Climaxes, they became an iconic part of logging operations across the United States and Canada, making them an essential vehicle for anyone modelling historic North American logging railroads.
