Historical Background

Disconnect log cars were among the most distinctive vehicles used on North American logging railroads during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than being a conventional freight car, each pair of disconnect trucks supported the ends of a single log, allowing exceptionally long timber to form the structural link between the two trucks. This ingenious arrangement enabled logging railroads to transport logs of varying lengths over lightly constructed track with minimal rolling stock weight.

Typically hauled by geared steam locomotives such as Shays, Heislers and Climaxes, disconnect log cars were a common sight on timber railroads throughout the United States and Canada. Empty trucks would return to the logging camps ready for the next load, making unloaded disconnect cars just as authentic as loaded ones on a working logging railroad.
