Details
The TGV Sud-Est holds a special place in railway history as the first generation of France’s world-famous high-speed trains. Introduced in 1981 on the LGV Sud-Est line between Paris and Lyon, it marked the beginning of Europe’s high-speed rail era. Before the line officially opened, the TGV Sud-Est operated on conventional tracks, but once service began, it reached speeds of up to 260 km/h – a remarkable achievement for its time.
A Record-Breaking Legacy
By 1983, following the line’s extension, the TGV’s top speed increased to 270 km/h, surpassing Japan’s Shinkansen and earning the title of the world’s fastest train in regular service. Continued technical developments later boosted its maximum speed to 300 km/h, solidifying its status as a symbol of French engineering excellence and innovation.
An Enduring Icon
Even after retirement, the TGV Sud-Est remains one of the most recognisable trains in the world. Its striking orange livery, aerodynamic design, and record-breaking performance continue to inspire model railway enthusiasts and railfans alike. This iconic train represents not only speed, but also the dawn of modern high-speed travel in Europe.
