Details

Amfleet I cars are a series of single-level intercity passenger coaches built by the Budd Company for Amtrak during the mid-1970s. They were primarily designed for short-distance corridor services, particularly along the Northeast Corridor in the United States.

The cars were developed from Budd’s earlier Metroliner electric multiple-unit design and feature a distinctive stainless-steel body with a rounded, tubular profile. This design gave the cars their characteristic aircraft-inspired appearance and durability.

A total of 492 Amfleet I cars were built between 1975 and 1977, forming the backbone of many Amtrak corridor services. They were introduced to modernise passenger services and replace older rolling stock inherited when Amtrak was created in 1971.

Although introduced nearly fifty years ago, many Amfleet I cars have remained in service on routes such as the Northeast Regional, Empire Service and Downeaster. However, Amtrak has begun planning their gradual replacement with new trainsets beginning later in the 2020s.
