Details

A gallery car is a type of commuter rail passenger coach used primarily in the United States, especially on regional rail services in the Northeast such as New Jersey Transit, SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), and the Long Island Rail Road. These cars were designed to increase passenger capacity on busy commuter routes.

The defining feature of a gallery car is a split-level interior with a central aisle and narrow upper platforms at each end of the car. These platforms overlook the lower seating area, creating a distinctive interior “gallery” or mezzanine effect. This layout allows passengers on the upper level to step down into the seating area, helping to increase seating capacity without increasing car length or interfering with platform height.

Gallery cars were built in five major batches between the 1960s and 1990s, initially by manufacturers such as St. Louis Car Company, Pullman-Standard and Budd. They are most commonly found in multilevel commuter fleets in the New York and Philadelphia regions. Modern gallery cars remain in service today, refurbished to meet current accessibility and comfort standards.
