Description

M497 Black Beetle Jet Powered RDC NYC 497

Details:

Experience one of the most remarkable experiments in American railroad history with the KATO N Scale M-497 "Black Beetle" Jet-Powered RDC. Faithfully recreating the famous New York Central experimental high-speed railcar, this unique model captures the futuristic appearance and engineering ambition of the legendary jet-powered Budd Rail Diesel Car.

Originally created as a low-cost high-speed rail experiment, the M-497 combined a standard Budd RDC with twin jet engines, creating one of the fastest rail vehicles ever to operate on North American rails. KATO has accurately reproduced this iconic prototype with exceptional detailing, smooth-running performance, illuminated jet engine effects while travelling forward, and compatibility with KATO's Sound Box system (sound card sold separately).

Whether you're modelling the New York Central in the 1960s, collecting historic American railroad equipment, or looking for an eye-catching centrepiece for your N Scale layout, the M-497 Black Beetle is an unforgettable addition to any collection.

Features:

  • Twin jet engines illuminate when operating in the forward direction for an impressive operating effect.
  • Precision KATO drive mechanism delivers reliable, smooth-running performance.
  • Rear-mounted KATO knuckle coupler allows the M-497 to operate with standard N Scale rolling stock.
  • Ready for optional KATO interior lighting and compatible with the KATO Sound Box system using the dedicated sound card (both sold separately).
  • Analogue DC Model
  • 1:160 Scale

Historical Background

In 1966, the New York Central Railroad sought an economical way to explore high-speed passenger rail without investing in entirely new train designs. Engineers modified a standard Budd Rail Diesel Car (RDC) by mounting two surplus jet engines on the roof, creating the experimental M-497, quickly nicknamed the "Black Beetle."

Completed in just 30 days with a budget of approximately $35,000, the experimental railcar underwent testing on the straight, level tracks of the Midwest. On 23 July 1966, the M-497 achieved an astonishing top speed of 183 mph (295 km/h), setting a North American rail speed record that stood for decades. Although the project proved the concept's remarkable performance, inconsistent track conditions across the United States made routine high-speed jet-powered rail travel impractical, and the experiment was ultimately discontinued.

Today, the M-497 Black Beetle remains one of the most iconic and unusual locomotives in American railroad history, making it a fascinating prototype for New York Central enthusiasts and collectors of unique U.S. railroad models.
