The Porsche 917 was introduced in 1969 to give Porsche a five-litre endurance racer capable of winning at the top level. By 1971, the evolved 917 KH — sporting new “shark-fin” tail stabilizers — dominated the World Sportscar Championship and triumphed at Le Mans. In the hands of Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep, the #22 917 covered a staggering 5,335 km at an average of 222.3 km/h, setting a distance record that stood for 39 years. Powered by a flat-12 engine producing around 600 PS, the 917 combined raw speed, aerodynamic innovation, and legendary endurance, forever changing sports-car racing.
