Details
The LKM V 10 C is a class of narrow-gauge diesel locomotive originally developed for industrial, field, and light railway use in East Germany. Built by VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx (LKM) in Babelsberg from 1959 to 1975, nearly 500 examples were produced for a variety of track gauges from 600 mm up to 1067 mm. It evolved from the earlier Ns 4 series as part of LKM’s effort to standardise components with the larger V 10 B locomotive, adopting a reliable six-cylinder diesel engine driving a mechanical four-speed gearbox that transmitted power via a jackshaft and coupling rods to all three axles.
Designed for low-speed shunting and light line duties, the V 10 C had a compact 16-ton body, a top speed of about 24 km/h, and a C-axle arrangement that made it ideal for tight curves and uneven track found on narrow-gauge lines. In the later era of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, many V 10 C locomotives were incorporated into the Class 199 numbering series, with examples serving on lines such as the Spreewald Railway and the Berlin Park Railway into the 1990s.
