The Jagst Valley Railway (Jagsttalbahn) in Baden-Württemberg has a long and colourful history spanning more than 125 years, during which many rare and fascinating railway vehicles operated on this picturesque narrow-gauge line. One of the most beloved was a small yet distinctive steam locomotive affectionately known as “Nicki S.” Its story, marked by wartime origins and a remarkable preservation effort, has become part of German narrow-gauge railway folklore.

Built in 1941 by Henschel as an HF 110 C locomotive for the German Army, this tender steam locomotive was a product of the turbulent years of World War II. After the war, it was taken over by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in 1948, where it ran briefly as road number 798.101 before being withdrawn from service in 1952. For decades the locomotive faced an uncertain future until it was rescued by Bielefeld entrepreneur Walter Seidensticker, who undertook an extensive restoration and lovingly named it after his daughter as “Nicki S.”

From 1984, “Nicki S.” became a star attraction on the Jagst Valley Railway, delighting visitors on steam services between Möckmühl and Dörzbach. When operations on the Jagsttalbahn ceased, the locomotive was transferred to the Mühlenstroth steam railway, where it remains preserved today as “Nicki und Frank S.” Although no longer able to return to the Jagst Valley due to its conversion from 750 mm to 600 mm gauge, its legacy lives on. For model railway enthusiasts, “Nicki S.” represents a classic HF 110 C narrow-gauge steam locomotive, ideal for recreating historic German branch lines and celebrating the enduring heritage of the Jagst Valley Railway on LGB and garden railway layouts.
