The Rhaetian Railway Ge 4/6 was an early class of metre-gauge electric locomotives operated by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) — the iconic narrow-gauge network in Switzerland’s Canton of Graubünden. Built between 1912 and 1918 by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) with electrical equipment from several manufacturers, the Ge 4/6 was developed to meet the demands of Switzerland’s pioneering electrification of mainline routes such as the Samedan-Scuol line.

Under the Swiss classification system, Ge 4/6 denotes a narrow-gauge electric locomotive with six axles, four of which are driven. A total of eight locomotives were produced, and the first examples entered service in 1912-1913, marking RhB’s early commitment to AC electric traction at a time when such technology was still evolving. Over subsequent years, additional units joined the fleet, each helping to haul passenger and freight trains across the rugged alpine terrain.

The Ge 4/6 class enjoyed a long career, serving in light to medium duty roles across the RhB network until the mid-20th century as more powerful locomotives were introduced. Withdrawals began in the 1960s, and by 1984 most had been retired; however, two locomotives have been preserved, with one still operational on heritage services and another displayed in a museum, keeping the legacy of this classic Swiss electric pioneer alive.
