Details

The “Spreewald” is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful narrow-gauge steam locomotives in Germany, and it remains a true jewel of railway heritage. This historic 2-6-0T locomotive was built in 1917 by the Jungenthal works on the Sieg, along with four sister engines, and first served on the Pillkaller Light Railway in East Prussia, navigating the dense forests near the Russian Empire border. Capable of 40 km/h (25 mph), the agile three-driving-axle engine quickly became a reliable workhorse on short lines, combining power with remarkable maneuverability.

During the final months of World War II, some of these light line locomotives were evacuated westward, and one eventually arrived on the Spreewald Railway, where it was numbered 99 5633 by the German State Railway. After its original route was closed, the locomotive survived the post-war era in East Germany before finding a new home at the Deutsches Eisenbahn-Museum (DEV) in Bruchhausen-Vilsen, Germany’s first museum railway. Its charm and historic significance led to its introduction into the LGB garden railway program in 1988, and it has remained one of the most beloved narrow-gauge models ever since. In celebration of the DEV Museum Railway’s 60th anniversary, LGB is reissuing the Spreewald locomotive, offering collectors and model railway enthusiasts a chance to recreate this classic short line steam engine with a fascinating story and enduring legacy.
