Details

The MOB Class FZe 6/6 powered baggage car is a striking example of early Swiss metre-gauge electric traction, built entirely of metal for durability and performance. In the 1930s, the Montreux–Oberland Bernois Railway (MOB) sought powerful locomotives to handle the steep grades of the legendary “Golden Mountain Pullman Express” for the CIWL. As a result, two six-axle electric railcars with baggage compartments were constructed by SIG/BBC in 1932/1933, entering service as road numbers 2001 and 2002. With over 1,100 horsepower, a length of 17 meters (55 ft 3 in), and a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), these B-B-B powered railcars were among the most powerful electric locomotives on metre-gauge lines at the time.

Although originally intended for luxury passenger service, the economic downturn of the 1930s meant the FZe 6/6 cars were mainly used for freight transport, including transporting cement during the construction of the Hongrin Dam in the late 1960s. Over the decades, both railcars underwent multiple redesignations and conversions. After a fire damaged road number 2002 in the late 1970s, it was eventually stored in the mid-1990s due to small wheel diameters. In 2008, it was restored at the Blonay–Chamby Museum Railway, incorporating parts from 2001, and today FZe 6/6 2002 operates as an articulated museum electric railcar, delighting visitors and serving as a historic model for metre-gauge enthusiasts.
