Details

The New Pendolino is a family of high speed tilting electric trains built by Alstom from the mid-2000s onward as the latest generation of the well-known Pendolino series. These trainsets use active tilting technology that allows them to lean into curves, enabling higher speeds on conventional railway lines while maintaining passenger comfort. This made the design especially suitable for routes combining classic main lines with limited high-speed infrastructure.

New Pendolinos are typically built in seven-car formations with four powered cars and three trailers, seating around 430 passengers. They are designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h and are equipped for multi-system operation, depending on the variant. The Italian ETR 600 operates under 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC, while the international ETR 610 / SBB RABe 503 adds 15 kV AC capability and additional signalling systems for cross-border operation in Switzerland and Germany.

The New Pendolino entered service from 2008 onwards with Trenitalia and international operators on routes linking Italy, Switzerland and Germany. Further derivatives of the design have appeared in other countries under the wider Pendolino family, including Spain and Poland.
