Details

The FS Class ALn 668 is a family of light diesel railcars built for Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), the Italian state railway, between 1956 and 1983. The name ALn 668 comes from Italian Automotrice Leggera a nafta meaning light diesel railcar with 68 seats, and it became the standard regional DMU on unelectrified lines across Italy. Nearly 800 units were built in many sub-series by Fiat Ferroviaria and Breda, making it one of Italy’s most numerous diesel types. These railcars were designed with underfloor diesel engines, giving a comfortable interior with space for passengers. Multiple series featured similar mechanical layouts but varied slightly in trim and performance. Most were rated for up to 130 km/h and offered reliable service on local and regional services through the late 20th century, with many examples still in service or preserved today. The ALn 668 also inspired related designs abroad and remained a backbone of Italian diesel operation for decades, making it a great prototype for layouts depicting mid-20th-century to modern regional rail services in HO and N scales.
