Details

A Crocodile is a distinctive type of electric locomotive nicknamed for its long “snouts” at each end that resemble the jaws of a crocodile. These “noses” house the traction motors and driving gear, while the crew cab and heavy electrical equipment sit in a central section that pivots between the two ends. This articulated design allowed full traction and flexibility on routes with tight curves and steep gradients where early electric freight needed both power and smooth running.

The most famous Crocodiles were the Swiss Federal Railways’ Ce 6/8 II and Ce 6/8 III, built from 1919 into the 1920s to haul heavy freight over the Gotthard main line through the Alps. These locomotives combined large motors with articulated frames to handle tight mountain track and heavy loads, becoming legendary for their reliability and unique appearance. Several examples have survived and are preserved, with a few even operational on heritage services.

Similar locomotives were later developed or nicknamed Crocodiles elsewhere, including Austrian ÖBB classes 1089 and 1189, sometimes called “Austrian Crocodiles,” and German DRG classes E 93/E 94, referred to as “German Crocodiles.” Narrow-gauge versions on the Rhaetian Railway (RhB Class Ge 6/6 I) are also often grouped under the Crocodile label due to their comparable long-bonnet profile.
